Fifty Grey Shades for Spring

This Spring gray is a going to be a big color especially in women’s suits and outerwear.  This is a nice option if you are not fond of the bold blacks and whites that are characteristic of women’s wear this fall. The grey in question tends toward being a television tube gray although coal colors are also in evidence.  A good example of this is designer Maria Cornejo’s large sheath with a V-neck and a V hemline with flapping three quarter length sleeves.

Some designers have also been making dresses that have both a hint of gray and yellow in them. Honor showed a gray a pale yellow dress with a floral and branches print.  Suzanne Rae featured a long flapping coat with wings in a gray that graduates to a yellow sheen and Richard Chai Love shoes a min-dress with bands of yellow and gray detail.

Cooler grays that border on being a Robin’s egg blue are also in fashion. Balancia showed a beautiful double-breasted men’s suit with a boxy cut and big boxy pockets. This was worn with patent leather Beatle boots and long, fitted cigar pants. Hermes showed a slate gray hot pants suit with underpants and a top sleeveless shift that will move well from Spring into summer.  For an interesting contrast the Hermes dress was paired with pea green pointy flat loafers.  Prabal Gurung showed a dress that was Robin’s egg blue with ruffles down  the front and along a pinafore type collar. More ruffles in tiers dropped fro the waist to the floor.

Shades of silver, light grey and coal hues were also in evidence on the Spring runway.  Calvin Klein showed a pert little A line mini dress with a silver and white sheen with platform heels. Christopher Kane showed a gray shift with three large bows decorating the front.  Prada showed the darkest gray dress with a very seventies looking flower in white and black decorating the front.

Some of the offerings on the runway were quite bizarre. Rick Owens showed a gray dress with short sleeves that looked exactly like a travel bag for suits. On a skinny model however it looked like a piece of Avanti garde art. Just as weird were the grey sweater tops worn with full, long tulle gray skirts that were worn by blindfolded models.

To counteract the coldness and masculinity of gray some designers are translating the gowns into beautiful flowing silk gowns.
